Why Decant Wine

Why decant wine? There are several basic reasons to perform the simple act of pouring wine from a bottle to a decanter. First, is to separate the sediment and residue from aged red wines. The other is to obtain the best taste from a young, full-bodied red wine. Decanting allows the wine to breathe, softening the wine and releasing the aromas. Furthermore, a beautiful decanter adds a touch of panache and sets the tone for a wonderfully prepared meal.
Decanting wine that is aged? First, set the bottle up for several hours to allow the sediment to settle to the bottom. Remove the entire capsule (foil) and the cork from the neck of the bottle. Place a light source behind the bottle and pour the wine gently and slowly into the decanter. The key is to stop pouring when you observe sediment traveling up the neck of the wine.
How to decant a young wine? There is no trick. Simply pour the wine into a decanter. The splash will stimulate the wine and introduce air quickly.
